Shots Fired At Officers, 2 In Custody
A gunman opens fire on Asheville Police officers. The shooting happened behind the Shiloh Community Center on Brooklyn Road. Police were in the process of serving a warrant when another man became agitated. That man ran off. Then as they're actually placing the suspect in the squad car, they're fired at.
The officers dove for cover. Residents here say it was about seven shots in all. Dozens of squad cars blocked off several blocks surrounding the Shiloh Community Center. School buses were being turned around, with police telling residents to stay indoors from about 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Asheville Police were at one point speaking with a man they believed to be the gunman on the phone, says he was speaking from inside a nearby structure. But then Asheville Police says that broke down. At some point it appears the man slipped through the police perimeter because the next thing officials says was that a person of interest had been arrested with another man in the Ingles parking lot, off Hendersonville Road nearby.
There are still a lot of details to unfold in this investigation. There are no mug shots or descriptions of the men. News 13 is told the two men are at police headquarters right now being questioned.
