The Asheville Fire Department remembers a fallen firefighter on the 50th anniversary of his death.
Gus Werhan died in 1963 while fighting a fire on Biltmore Avenue in downtown Asheville. AFD remembered Werhan during a ceremony on Sunday. Chief Scott Burnett says it's important for the department to remember the contributions of all firefighters, and especially the seven that have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Burnett says AFD is working with Asheville City Council to develop a policy that would allow of the renaming of buildings in honor of those who have died in the line of duty.
