Mega Millions Jackpot Nears Record
The Mega Millions lottery has now reached the second largest payout in U.S. history at $636 million. Across the mountains Tuesday, folks were buying in.
One Biltmore Village gas station sold about 600 tickets before noon, that's more than three times what staff said they would usually sell in a day.
Many of the folks buying tickets were also in office lottery pools with colleagues - they paid in several dollars and agreed to split the winnings with the group.
Allan Tarleton of Asheville's Van Winkle Law Firm said office pools are safe to buy into, as long as details are ironed out beforehand.
"It would be an enforcable contract as long as there's some kind of expression, and it doesn't have to be in writing, about what the terms of the contract are," said Tarleton.
He said the group should decide on details like whether they'll remain anonymous, and whether to take the payout in a lump sum if they win.
