Highway Widening Concerns
A popular stretch of mountain highway is getting a makeover. But some folks living along it wonder at what cost?
The NCDOT is adding two lanes to US 19E through Yancey and Mitchell counties to make the drive from Asheville to Boone easier. But the project requires an additional 15 feet on each side, which means hundreds of homeowners are having to sign easements.
One homeowner says he was misled by the NCDOT and that the new road will come much closer to his home than first thought.
"And to think that they took my whole front yard off, I'm not angry, I just don't know the word, it really hurts me deep," said Knarld Carroll.
The retired highway patrolman says the state gave him $3,000 for the easement. But he estimates his property value was slashed by $100,000.
The NC Eminent Domain Law Firm, will host an informational seminar, 1/16, 7pm at the Springmaid Mountain Resort in Spruce Pine. The event is open to anyone that may he affected by the widening project, attorney will be available to field questions about individual cases.
