Power Outages Cause Pipes To Freeze

Furnaces shut down and the lights go out in some Henderson County communities during record low temperatures. It happened before sunrise Tuesday morning. About 7,600 Duke Energy customers lost power.

A maintenance worker says the outage froze a sprinkler line in a Hendersonville home. The power went off at 5:30 a.m., and he says the pipe froze. When power returned shortly before noon, he says it flooded part of the house and ruined the ceiling.

Because of zero-degree temperatures, the American Red Cross in Hendersonville set up a temporary shelter for anyone wanting to warm up. That shelter was canceled because Duke Energy managed to restore power to most of the areas affected by mid-afternoon.

Emergency management officials say fire departments often check on people in their districts during lengthy power outages. They have lists of people who may be living alone or have special health concerns.
