Treva Morgan, director of Park Ridge Health's Emergency Room reports a spike in flu cases.
"We've seen eleven positive confirmed cases so far and several more are pending," said Morgan Wednesday night.
Crystal Crisco has the flu and was admitted to Park Ridge Wednesday.
Crystal also has an an underlying illness, lupus.
"That's the reason it's so severe," said Crisco. "I just got a flu shot that's the whole thing I just got a flu shot not a month ago."
Experts say the shot can help but is no guarantee.
"It's hitting healthy people too," said Morgan.
Asheville and the surrounding area is seeing a spike in flu cases like the rest of the country. The best defense is to stay away from people with flu like symptoms and do a thorough job washing hands several times a day.
