Fire Destroys Home

A woman in Madison County lost her home after fire swept through this morning.

Firefighters were called to the cabin on Holland Road near Mars Hill around 9AM.

When they arrived, the inside was fully engulfed in flames and only a shell of the building was standing.

The home sits on top of a steep gravel driveway.

Firefighters struggled to make it up the road but managed to get pumps close to the building.

Chief Eddie Fox, Mars Hill Fire Department, "basically you just go and come down as easily as you can, hoping they don't slide off the mountain.  Actually, this driveway's better than most, most people let their driveways grow over to where we can't get through for the brush and stuff, that is a steep driveway, and the ground is soft but we made it so far, so good."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The homeowner works in Asheville and her co-workers say they will help her in the days ahead.
