With another half-inch of snow forecast for Mitchell and Yancey counties, area school administrators have canceled classes for Thursday. Main roads are in good condition but some secondary roads are ice and snow covered. Drivers were going below the speed limit with some sliding down rural roads that haven't been cleared by snow plows. Mom Pamela Scott has two children in Yancey county schools.
"It's frustrating when you're a single mom and you have to work with the school systems," said Scott. Her 14-year-old daughter goes to East Yancey Middle School.
"They could have school tomorrow, the roads aren't that bad," said Scott. "When I was in school they just put chains on them (bus tires), get them running."
But administrators felt otherwise and with the added concern of wind chills forecast at ten-below, school officials felt buses should not run and classes should be canceled.
