Armed Robbery Hoax

A man calls 911 saying he was shot while being mugged, but surveillance video from the scene reveals a much different story that authorities are calling bizarre.

Late Tuesday night surveillance video from a nearby business shows 24-year-old Daniel Reyes standing on Davis Street in downtown Spindale for nearly an hour. The Forest City man paces up and down the street before pausing, and shooting himself in the arm. He then threw the .38 caliber gun into a storm drain before appearing to jump around his car - apparently in pain - and call 911.

But he told the dispatcher and Spindale Police who arrived on scene that he had been mugged by a man wearing a hoodie.

Thursday Reyes was arrested and charged with falsifying a police report, a misdemeanor crime.

Officials say at this point they have no idea why Reyes shot himself, and then lied about it and said he appeared stable and didnt have a criminal record.

Police say, had Carolina Cabinetry - the business adjacent to Reyes when it happened - not turned over their security video, the investigation may have taken weeks.
