Double Fatal Accident Investigation
A father and son die in an accident on an icy road in Madison County.
Troopers say Dale and Bobby Wilson were driving down Big Pine Road when the car skidded on ice and flipped over in Big Pine Creek. First responders found both men deceased, trapped in the car upside down with their seat belts buckled. Big Pine Road follows the creek through the Barnard community. The shoulder is only six feet wide before the bank drops straight into the creek.
Troopers say Dale Wilson was driving when he lost control of the car. He was traveling downhill into a sharp curve when it left the road. Troopers say there's no evidence of excessive speed. The road surface was sprinkled with salt from NCDOT crews. But the cold temperatures Thursday morning could have kept the surface icy.
Family members say the road can be dangerous and needs a guard rail in the sharp curve. NCDOT officials say an engineer inspects all fatal accident scenes to determine if changes need to be made.
