Newtown Photo Upsets Educators

An Upstate company is apologizing this week after sending an email advertisement to Connecticut educators that included a picture of the Sandy Hook Elementary School after the tragic shootings of December 2012.

Commercial Window Shield of Taylors sent the email on Tuesday evening, highlighting the company's high-tech window treatments that reduce the spread of glass from explosions, gunshots and bad weather. They have completed projects with the federal government including the Pentagon and replacing windows in and around the U.S. Capitol buildings.

Reaction from educators was quick and angry. One official called it "the most insensitive, classless advertisements [sic] I have ever seen."

But the company was quick to apologize. After speaking with the company, the First Selectman of Newtown (the equivalent of mayor) said vice president Adam Staley was "contrite, understands the concerns we have, and is in the process of removing/modifying the ad right now. I very much appreciate his responsiveness and have expressed my thanks to him for understanding."

News 13 spoke with several educators on Friday who did not want to participate in a phone interview for fear of "piling on" to the company. They said they accepted the company's apology, and believed that it was an unintended error.

News 13 also spoke with Staley, who expressed sincere remorse for the incident. He forwarded the company's apology below:

As you may know, we sent out an email yesterday regarding the installation of security window film.  Although it was not our intention, we understand that the email was insensitive and disrespectful.  Our intention was not to profit from a tragedy.  Security window film is a current topic of discussion among many schools and towns throughout the country, and we were attempting to shine light on this safety measure.  We took the wrong approach with the email, and would like to offer our most sincere apologies; not only to those that received this email but also to the entire Newtown community.

We ask that you are able to forgive us for this gross misjudgment as we did not mean to re-open unhealed wounds.  I, myself, am a mother of a 2 year old and am pregnant with my second child.  The fact that I have unintentionally disrespected those affected by this tragedy makes me sick.

If you would like to speak with one of us further, please don't hesitate to call.  We would appreciate the opportunity to apologize one-on-one.

Thank you for taking the time to read this; and, again, we apologize wholeheartedly.

Sincerely,

Sarah Staley
