McDowell County Courthouse Leak Issues
Constant water leaks damage offices and restrooms in the McDowell County administration building. Water drips from the ceiling of a women's bathroom on the second floor. Ceiling tiles were ruined during recent storms. The water has flooded through ceilings in the second floor foyer. The leaks have damaged walls in three offices, and water has discolored ceilings in the first floor men's room. County officials blame the problems on the parking deck above their building and the fact that part of the concrete structure is underground. Efforts to fix the leaks have been temporary. County manager Chuck Abernathy says a check of the air in the building shows there's no toxic mold present. He says the solution to the problem is to seal the parking deck, which would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
