Two Women Fight Attackers
A home invasion turned into a shootout at a Spartanburg home late Tuesday night.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says Connie Young and Tamika Alexander were returning to their home on Draymont Drive around 11:30pm when three males with masks held them at gunpoint demanding money. Alexander was taken to the front door of the home, while Young was still in the car. Soon after, deputies say Young was shot by one of the male suspects. In the commotion that followed, Alexander pulled out her own weapon, a 9mm according to the sheriff's office, and emptied her magazine at the suspects.
"[She] hit two out of the three," said Sheriff Chuck Wright. "Pretty good shot to me."
According to incident reports, Dominick Thompson, one of the men hit, ran up Archer Road, parallel to Draymont, and hid behind a car in the yard of Kenneth DeClark, who lives about a quarter-mile from Young & Alexander.
DeClark ran out of the home with his shotgun after hearing the shots, and says Thompson then rushed at him. DeClark fired a warning shot, but says Thompson kept charging, so he hit him with the barrel of the gun.
"It didn't phase him at all, didn't hurt him. The average joe, it would have knocked him out, I hit him hard," says DeClark.
DeClark says Thompson got back up and came at him again, this time removing the gun from his belt as he charged. DeClark says he hit Thompson again with the shotgun, stunning the man and forcing him to surrender his weapon on the ground. Thompson then staggered up the street but was quickly apprehended by arriving sheriff's deputies.
"I call him a hero too...I want to publicly tell him that that's what neighbors do for one another, they look out for one another," said Sheriff Wright.
The sheriff says the last of the three men, Letoshman Bobo, escaped the scene in the suspects' vehicle, which deputies have not been able to identify. His condition and whereabouts are unknown.
According to the sheriff, Connie Young suffered 3-4 gunshot wounds during the incident. As of Wednesday afternoon, she is listed in serious condition at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
No condition was available for Dominick Thompson, but Nicholas Bobo was listed in fair condition.
