Gladys Knight May Revive Landmark

Soul legend Gladys Knight may play a role in reviving a landmark just outside of Canton. It's the old Reynolds School, where her husband Billy McDowell attended back in the day.

McDowell's listed on the deed for the purchase of the site for 80-thousand dollars.

According to web site TMZ, the mountain couple will spend two million dollars to convert the historic school into a recreation center.

Proud former students of Reynolds say they're surprised but thrilled that there might be some hope for the site. Many of them hoped to purchased to land years ago but never had the capital.

"I just thank God they saw the need to do it," says Thomas "Boogie" Bryant, class of '58. "And I'm glad it's back in the community."

The all black Reynolds school was open between 1948 and 1966.

Wallace McAdams, class of '59, says it's been sad to watch the structure fall into disrepair over the years.

"That sentimental part of our school, just to see it go down to nothing," McAdams says.

Billy McDowell went to school at Reynolds and his late mother worked there on campus. He and Gladys live in Weaverville. According to TMZ, they're hoping to keep the history of the community alive.

The Reynolds School and Reynolds High School Alumni Association is planning a reunion this July Fourth Weekend. The them is "Eye Of The Tiger," in homage to their Tigers mascot.
