A Transylvania County fugitive wanted for felony hit and run charges is behind bars Wednesday night. Scott McCombs also faces death by vehicle charges in the accident that took the life of Jerry Morgan. McCombs missed a court date in December and the judge revoked his bond.
The accident happened on US 64 west of Brevard in December of 2012. McCombs' case was delayed by toxicology tests that remained bottled up in the state crime lab. Those tests showed alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
But when he missed the court date, the Transylvania County Sheriff's Department began a search for him. Tuesday night, deputies and federal marshals tracked him down near Orlando, Florida. McCombs is now in the Orange County Jail.
Jerry Morgan's son and his family are relieved to hear about the arrest. He says prosecutors tell him McCombs could get five years if he's convicted. But Morgan says the family feels that justice is served as long as McCombs does time in prison.
The district attorney says with McCombs' bond revoked, he will remain in jail as the case goes to court. He says McCombs will likely have to go through an extradition hearing in Florida before he can be transported to Transylvania County.
