One Ring Phone Scam
Responding to a call might ring up a big bill.
The Better Business Bureau of Asheville is warning folks about the "one ring" scam. That's when an auto-dialer calls and hangs up after a single ring. Unsuspecting cell phone users respond to a foreign phone number and are charged as much as $30. In some cases, victims are hit with "adult entertainment" charges.
The BBB says the scam comes from the Caribbean islands.
"And so people need to be very careful about calling any number that comes to their cell phone," said Normal Messer, president of Asheville BBB.
The BBB says if there's any doubt, always research the area code online to see where it comes from before calling it back.
