Neighborhood Eats: Great Harvest Bread Company
This week, Neighborhood Eats stopped by Gerber Village in South Asheville for a bit of fresh-baked bread.
Great Harvest Bread Company just opened up on February 2018, so owners Andy and Peggi Singleton are just getting into the swing of things.
The shop is unique to other bakeries in that the Singletons mill their own wheat on site. Which means the loaves you find here are much different from bread you might buy in a grocery store
"It's going to sit in a packaging facility for quite a while, then it's shipped in a van to the store, then it's shipped to the back of the store, then it gets put on the shelf," Andy explained of grocery store-bought bread.
"The local hummus and the combination of that with the sprouts and the vegetables -- It's just really good," customer Charlene DiCristino said of the bakery's veggie sandwich.
"The lemon cookie is by far my favorite," customer Shayna Moore said. "It's what I look forward to. It's very good, it's very sweet, and the lemon zest is actually in the cookie, not just in the icing."
But at the end of day it's the bread that is what you might call their bread and butter.
"I never get tired of it. I'm an avid home baker," Peggi Singleton said. "I've been baking at home for about 20 years. So, there's something about the art of bread, especially for me, I just love."
Great Harvest Bread Company is located at 1838 Hendersonville Road, Suite 102, within Gerber Village. They're open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.
