Neighborhood Eats: King Daddy's Chicken and Waffles
For this week's Neighborhood Eats, we stopped by one of the hippest neighborhoods in town -- West Asheville.
King Daddy's Chicken and Waffles serves up the classic southern staple that's their namesake and then some.
The food is delicious, but if you're looking for royalty, you just might find it in the couple who owns this spot -- John and Julie Stehling.
King Daddy's Chicken and Waffles opened-up in 2014 along Haywood Road.
"Our side of West Asheville is really growing, which is really exciting," Julie said. "There's a ton of creative people in this town."
If the name of the restaurant isn't enticing to you, never fear.
"You don't have to love chicken to find something on the menu," John explained.
In fact, half of the menu is gluten free.
"I had someone cry because she had the fried chicken and she was pregnant, but she was gluten free and had celiac (disease), and when you're pregnant, you want comfort food," Julie recalled.
John and Julie Stehling are a real dynamic duo. Along with King Daddy's, they also own Early Girl Eatery -- one of the crown jewels of breakfasts restaurants in Asheville.
"Running two restaurants is difficult, but it's rewarding," John said.
Early Girl Eatery is one of Asheville's most celebrated spots and King Daddy's is just another adventure.
"Downtown Asheville is getting more and more touristy, and although we like that, we really like our locals," John said.
King Daddy's Chicken and Waffle is located at 444 Haywood Road in West Asheville. Check their website for hours of operation.
