Neighborhood Eats: La Guinguette
There's a hidden gem tucked away in Black Mountain with a French name that may give you a bit of trouble, but the food and ambiance you find here aims to please.
La Guinguette (pronounced 'la gang-get') serves French and Latin food in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere.
"Originally, la guingettes were kind of eclectic cabarets around the turn of the century in Paris, and they had kind of a fun-loving vibe, but with amazing food, as well," server SarahB explained of the name's origin.
This is exactly what owner Cecilia Marchesini had in mind when she opened three years ago.
"I don't want to be pretentious. I don't want to be fine dining. I want to be really homey and really nurturing," she said.
The restaurant is a joint venture between Cecilia, who's from Argentina, and her former husband, who's French.
The result was an eclectic mix of flavors -- including crepes, tamales and empanadas.
"When you put the menu together, I really like it," Cecilia said. "Because you have a lot of vegetarian and gluten-free and vegan and in Latin and French -- a little bit of everything."
But a lot of customers said there's one item that steals the show.
"She uses the real buckwheat like they do in France for the savory crepes, and her sweet crepes -- she makes a perfect batter," customer Philippe Delangre said. "I don't think you can find much better in France."
But for Cecilia, it's not just about the food.
"For me, to prepare a meal is a lot. It's like you feed people, and you get to their soul through their stomachs," she said.

La Guinguette is located at 105 Richardson Blvd. in Black Mountain and open Wednesday-Saturday. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, and dinner is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday brunch is offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
