Ask 13: Who bought the old Upper Hominy Fire Station?
In most places, the fire station is often the lifeblood and center of the community. That's also true in Upper Hominy Valley where residents have noticed some changes.
The fire department was established there on Pisgah Highway back in 1959. They've since moved into a new building, but it's their old property that's raising questions.
"The old Upper Hominy Fire Station was for sale. The sign has been taken down some time ago. Was it sold?" Connie Bercham wrote to Ask 13. "Who purchased it, and what's going in there?"
The former fire station is located at 1750 Pisgah Highway. The new station is located just up the road.
According to county records, the property -- along with the picnic area -- was sold in July 2017 for $335,000.
It was purchased by Kem Investments Group of Candler.
A worker at the fire station said the owner has a pepper farm and makes and sells sauces. His company's called Smoking J's Fiery Foods, and they have plans to expand at this location.
Some people have also asked about the future of the picnic area on the property. A person with the company said they have no immediate plans to remove it and are working on plans to keep it open to the public.
