$150,000 loan has Riceville community calling for county to take over fire dept. board
People who live in the Riceville community are outraged and calling for Buncombe County to step in and take control of the fire department's board.
One by one, a dozen community members called out the board's vice president over a $150,000 loan made to the Skyland Fire Department.
Board members voted on the loan by phone. And two board members stepped down over the issue.
Community members urged the county EMS director, attorney and commissioner at Monday night's meeting to take action. But the board would have to ask for help for the county to step in.
"We would look at that through the county finance department and the county attorney's office," Buncombe County EMS director Jerry Vehaun said. "But it's up to the board at this point whether they need our help."
Three additional board members have been replaced over issues with the bylaws.
