Troopers with North Carolina Highway Patrol say two separate wrecks along a Jackson County road resulted in two deaths.

Trooper Rico Stephens says both wrecks happened around the same time on Friday afternoon along US 441.

Stephens said one wreck happened in the southbound lane when a vehicle traveling north hydroplaned, lost control, went into southbound traffic, and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Stephens said a passenger in the northbound vehicle died at the scene, and everyone else was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The second wreck happened on US 441 north, heading toward Cherokee. Stephens said a Saturn passenger vehicle was traveling north when the driver lost control, went into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane, and crashed into a van.

Stephens said the driver of the van died at the scene.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

The road was closed for a time as crews responded to the scene.
