ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) —
Asheville police have released crime statistics for 2016--and an increase in violent crime sticks out.
Violent crime is up significantly, while property crime stayed at the same level.
These are the official stats for the last calendar year, just released on June 9, 2017. The comparison is between 2016 and 2015.
A look at the numbers in detail:
There were 9 homicides in 2016 vs. 7 the year before, an increase of 29 percent.
- Rapes are up nearly 50 percent.
- Aggravated assaults are up 30 percent.
- Crimes that decreased include robberies, burglaries and larcenies. All are down very slightly, one to two percent.
- Arrests for violent crimes constitute only about one-third of the total number of crimes committed.
We've reached out to Asheville police for perspective and their comments on these numbers, and we hope to bring you more from them Friday evening at 5 and 6.
