ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Asheville Police Department has identified the victim and the officer involved in Saturday's shooting incident in which a man was shot and killed.

The victim has been identified as Jai Lateef Solveig Williams, 35, of Asheville.

The officer involved in the shooting is Sgt. Tyler Radford. Radford has been with the Asheville Police Department since 2008 and is currently assigned as a patrol supervisor.

According to police, a call came in about "shots fired" at Pisgah View Apartments and police got a description of a white vehicle.

The white vehicle was spotted sometime later, police said, and a chase ensued to Deaverview Apartments, with four people in the white vehicle.

During the chase, a woman inside the vehicle appeared to be struggling with the driver and tried to get out of the vehicle, according to police.

The suspect "ran up on a curb," police said, and then "displayed a gun" after ignoring commands from an officer and before the officer used deadly force.

Sgt. Radford, police said, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
