Asheville volunteers distribute gifts to hundreds of elderly residents
A local agency is working to make sure our low-income elderly neighbors have a merry Christmas.
About 18 volunteers with the Land of Sky Regional Council spent Monday morning packing 554 presents to be handed out to residents at adult care homes across Buncombe County. The gifts contained personal items like socks, toothpaste, books and card games.
Organizers started the holiday giveaway to help everyone get into the giving spirit.
"There are 86 adult care homes in Buncombe County, and a lot of those residents are low-income. So, any gift is more than they get. A lot of them don't have family, or local family or any family at all, so this is their Christmas," Land of Sky's Julia Gibson said.
Organizers said the donations come from local businesses and individuals. This is the second year for the giveaway.
Volunteers delivered many of the gifts Mondays afternoon.
