Just after 4 p.m., three suspects with their faces covered committed a smash and grab heist at Spicer Greene Jewelers on Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville. Investigators report all three suspects pulled up and took off on red and white dirt bikes. Two of the three wore full face helmets. Police report one man stood lookout, while the two others went into the store and smashed a case in the back of the store and ran out. Lt. Geoffrey Rollins reports at least one of the men had a handgun.

"It was pretty quick," said Rollins. "One of them stood lookout, while two went in, collected some jewelry and left very quickly."

No staff was hurt, and no shots were fired, but the suspects did get away, which is why APD is asking for tips. One helmet was red and white and the other suspect's helmet was yellow and white. The third suspect wore a grey hoodie. The store does have surveillance tape. Rollins said he and other investigators were reviewing the tape but he did not know if the suspects verbally threatened the four or five staff members in the store.

Asheville police said all three had on black clothing.
