UPDATE: Missing autistic child found safe

Authorities spent about seven hours Thursday searching for a missing autistic child near Turkey Pen Road in Transylvania County. The boy was found shortly after 10 p.m.

The Transylvania County Sheriff's Office, Mills River Fire and Rescue and Hendersonville Police were among those involved in the search near the Henderson County line.

The search for him started about 4 p.m. Rescue crews used tracking dogs, swift water teams and helicopters in the search.

Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said they thought the missing 10-year-old may have become scared during a thunderstorm and ran off. National Weather Service data show there were storms in the area for at least an hour Thursday afternoon.

Kayaks were brought in to aid in the search. There is a creek in area of search, Mahoney said.
