The luck of the Irish was with students at Avery's Creek Elementary School when their teacher gave them a pretty tough assignment -- build a boat out of three straws, five pipe cleaners, five Popsicle sticks, glue, aluminum foil and some tape. That's it.

Their STEM challenge was to build a boat that could carrying a leprechaun's 20 pieces of gold across the river. But to make that happen, they had to work as a team.

"Mrs. Bruet told us to work as a team together, so we just passed the boat around and around," second-grader Rosa said.

"We tried our best to make it like all of the other kids, my classmates. But they did a really good job. But some of them were leaking, but it was OK," second-grader Datrion said.

Ms. Bruet said it's exciting to watch her students collaborate to come up solutions to their problems. She said it's a skill they'll use the rest of their lives.
