Black Mountain merchants brace for short shopping weekend

This weekend is typically huge for small businesses as people do their Christmas shopping. But the snowstorm making its way to Western North Carolina could put a big damper on sales.

Throngs of people were out Friday enjoying the Holly Jolly in Black Mountain. Snow had not made an appearance and weather was not the main concern -- yet.

Mountain Me owner Hopey Bissett, who just moved from central Florida, said she's happy to have her store in Black Mountain and, if foot traffic is down Saturday because of the storm, so be it. She anticipates closing Sunday because of the snow.

Next door, Krista Anne's, which has been open 12 years, expects a disappointing weekend for retail.

"Dreading it, I guess. Businesses need to stay open, and, when you hear of all the weather reports, nobody wants to buy clothes. They want to buy food," Krista Anne's Nancy Paeplow said.

The parade scheduled for Saturday in Black Mountain has been rescheduled for next weekend.
