A man is dead after a wellness check on Cane Creek Road on Friday evening in Buncombe County.

Investigators initially said there was a traffic stop, however, they've clarified, later saying it was a wellness check.

Investigators say the man's family called investigators, asking for a wellness check.

Natalie Bailey, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, says a "be on the lookout" alert was sent for the car.

A deputy found the car about a half mile from Cane Creek Middle School, where things took a turn for the worse.

About 6:15 p.m., the sheriff's office received the call that shots were fired. Authorities said the man turned a gun on himself and took his own life.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said this sort of situation is never easy, but they are lucky no one else was hurt.

“None of our personnel was injured or hurt. Of course, whenever there’s a situation like this, we are concerned and our heart goes out to the family of the person involved,” BCSO spokeswoman Natalie Bailey said.
