The city of Asheville is proposing residents go a week without meat or animal products for the city's first Vegan Challenge Week.

The seven-day challenge is produced by Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, a local no-kill animal shelter.

The City Vegan Challenge Guide includes a nutrition guide, recipes, and grocery list. It also includes a list of local vegan restaurants and businesses.

Organizers said they put this together to help people live a healthier lifestyle while saving animals.

"The reason why we wanted to do this because for the animals, for our health and for the environment," Paul Berry, the executive director of Brother Wolf, said. "You know, animal agriculture is the number one cause of animal cruelty in the world."

The challenge runs through the week of June 4, 2018, and ends with Asheville's Vegan Fest this weekend.
