BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- The Big Ivy area was on everyone's minds at the county commissioner meeting on Tuesday.

The commissioners voted unanimously to make the Big Ivy area near Barnardsville a wilderness area in the Pisgah National Forest. More than 30 people stood up to speak about the forest's importance to the area."Big Ivy is far more valuable as a protected watershed, view shed, and world-class recreation destination that a potential timber sale," Friends of Big Ivy member Will Harlan said. "The people here today believe that Big Ivy deserves protection from logging and wilderness is the only way to accomplish that."The Forest Service said there are no current proposals to log the Big Ivy area, however, congress must make a final decision on naming it a wilderness.
