A mountain community is claiming a small victory over what residents said could become a big problem.

The Henderson County Planning Board voted Thursday night to deny a rezoning request that would pave the way for an asphalt plant.

Southeastern Asphalt wanted to build the plant off Spartanburg Highway in East Flat Rock.

Protesters met in a Blue Ridge Community College parking lot to submit their public comments to the board.

"One of the things we did as neighbors was hire a lawyer and a consultant with our fundraising money to look and see if it's compatible with the actual Henderson County plan and the East Flat Rock plan, and we'll reveal tonight that it is not compatible. That is our main reason why we are against it," Michelle Tennant Nicholson and Shannon Nicholson, co-founders of Friends of East Flat Rock, said.

Now, the vote goes to the county commission, which could take the board's recommendation or go against it.
