Fatal accident in Great Smoky Mountains National Park


    UPDATE: Park Service officials have identified the Georgia man killed in the wreck.

    A road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is closed after a fatal accident Saturday afternoon.

    Park Rangers say in a release they responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Newfound Gap Road at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

    One fatality has been reported and multiple people with injuries were taken to area hospitals.

    Newfound Gap Road is closed from Sugarlands Visitor Center to Oconaluftee Visitor Center and is expected to reopen around 10 p.m.

    Rangers say more information will be released when it becomes available.
