Suspect and victim identified in deadly Patton Avenue shooting

The Asheville Police Department has released the names of the people involved in a Friday shooting on Patton Avenue that resulted in a teen's death.

Derrick Edwards, 24, is facing a charge of First Degree Murder in the shooting death of Clarence Williams, 18, of Asheville.

Investigators responded to the Dollar General in the 1000 block of Patton Avenue just before 4:30 Friday.

That's where they found Williams suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was transported to Mission Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses reported seeing a yellow SUV fleeing the scene which was located and pulled over on Fairview Road near Biltmore Village.

Investigators say Edwards was arrested and is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center without bond.
