Gladys Knight and husband hold kickoff for new community center

Soul legend Gladys Knight and her husband, Canton native Billy McDowell, are turning a historic old high school into a community center.

"I walked out in the driveway the other day. I just looked around at what we've been blessed with and what we're trying to do,"said Knight. And it just makes me happy. I know this is what we're supposed to be ."

They hosted a kickoff event Monday morning at the former site of the all-black Reynolds School. Plans call for a music center, child care, a gym, kitchen, computer center, library, a performing arts room, and athletic field.

McDowell grew up in Canton and attended the school as a young boy. Now, he wants to give something back to the community, for all to enjoy.

His wife, Gladys Knight, says it will be an uplifting place.

The project is expected to cost approximately $5 million.

The couple has established the RHS Community Foundation, where people can make a donation.

A variety of fundraisers are planned, including a Gladys Knight concert in Asheville.
