Haywood County Sheriff's Office officials said someone is breaking into vehicles in the area.

Surveillance video from the Marathon gas station on Champion Drive in Canton caught a suspect in action Monday night.

It shows the suspect going through a truck parked at the pump.

Authorities said Canton, Clyde and Cruso are some of the areas that have been hit, with Haywood County reporting at least eight break-ins in the last week and Canton about 10.

Investigators said the easiest way to prevent this crime is to simply lock your doors.

“We've had wallets and credit cards and social security cards, UPS devices. Just, it's clear they're going vehicle to vehicle, popping the door open, just taking what was there,” sheriff’s office spokesperson Lindsay Regner said.

Local agencies are working together to identify any possible trends and suspects in these hits and ask anyone who sees anything suspicious or has any information to contact authorities. To remain anonymous, you can also call the CrimeStoppers tip line at 1-877-92CRIME.
