Helpmate, UNCA hold domestic violence vigil
Helpmate and UNC Asheville partnered to raise awareness about domestic violence.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the two held a vigil Wednesday on the UNCA campus.
Two domestic violence survivors shared their stories and Helpmate director April Burgess-Johnson offered encouraging words for those who are struggling.
"It's all about hope," Burgess-Johnson said. "And hope really boils down to two things. Hope is the belief that things can get better and that I can do something to make them better. And Helpmate is there to help people find that path to hope, safety and security."
The names of domestic violence homicide victims were also read to remember those who lost their lives in North Carolina over the last year.
