How to cash in on tax benefits before the end of the year

The end of 2016 is just days away, but there's still time to reap some tax benefits with those end of the year donations.

"The most important thing to take a look at before you make a year end contribution whether its cash or non-cash item like clothing or furniture or something like that is to make sure the organization you're donating to is a tax exempt organization," said Celeste Collins, executive director of OnTrack WNC, a nonprofit source for financial education and counseling.

If you donate non-cash items, make sure to get a receipt for your tax deductions.
