    Hurricane Florence track update:

    --

Hurricane Florence remains a dangerous category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph as of 8am Wednesday.

The storm is still roughly 500 miles from Cape Fear, NC. The track remains similar to previous ones through Friday. The storm expected to head towards the NC coast. The track has shifted beyond day 4 and 5. The storm is forecasted to head farther south, into South Carolina. The storm continues to move SW and then NW towards WNC by Sunday.

This new path will give us a greater chance for rain in WNC. 5-7" possible with some models showing more rainfall possible.

Right now, everyone needs to be prepared for the possibility of significant rain and wind starting some time this weekend and possibly lasting into next week. Wind will be less of an issue, but even moderate wind gusts could cause trees to fall and power outages.

Florence will be much less impactful for WNC if it maintains a more north/northwesterly path after landfall on Friday

Don't be scared, be prepared! Get an emergency weather kit together and have a plan of action as to where you would go if flooding threatens your home.

    • Prepare for the possibility of power outages for an extended period of time.
    • Trim large, low-hanging limbs away from your home.
    • Clean out gutters and downspouts.
    • Tie down loose outdoor items or furniture.

The National Forest Service issued an alert Wednesday morning

The Bridge Church in Hendersonville is opening as a shelter.

The response phone line is already open, and church officials are welcoming anyone who needs shelter, food and water. They also have air mattresses, locker rooms with showers and space for pets.

Pastor David Lewkowicz said the church is stocked for people leaving the coast to get away from the storm, as well as local people. He said he wants everyone to know they're welcome.

"That's what Jesus tell us to do. That's why I work here. It's why we started here in Hendersonville. It's the love on our community and our state, Lewkowicz said. "So, we want to open our doors to those who are hurting, those who are in need. Not just those who are retreating from the coast, but those who are also hurting here in Hendersonville."

For more information on the Bridge Church shelter, call 828-222-0536.

Airbnb has activated its Open Homes Program for Hurricane Florence evacuees, volunteers and first responders.

The service is available through Oct. 1.
