ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — U.S. Congressman Madison Cawthorn (R-District 11) is just days into his new role. But, the 25-year-old, who is the youngest serving congressman in modern history, has found himself embroiled in controversy for participating in the pro-Trump rally that preceded the chaos at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.
Cawthorn, of Hendersonville, used Twitter to encourage supporters to attend the rally. Cawthorn spoke at the event and congratulated the gatherers as he came onstage.
“This crowd has some fight in it,” Cawthorn said. “And I am so thankful for each and every one of you.”
Hours later, at the urging of President Donald Trump, supporters moved to the Capitol, and many bullied their way inside.

But, despite his tweets urging “millions of patriotic Americans stand for their country,” Cawthorn said he felt no culpability in what unfolded Wednesday afternoon.
“I don't feel I had any responsibility for them attacking the Capitol,” Cawthorn said. “It was despicable. They are thugs.”
One tweet showed a photo of Cawthorn with the hashtag #stopthesteal, referencing false allegations the presidential election wasn’t fairly executed.
The tweet stated, “The fate of a nation comes down to the events of tomorrow. This New Republican Party will not back down.”
Cawthorn said he repeatedly tweeted against violence, saying his efforts would be to argue his allegations on the House floor, which he did once the Capitol was deemed safe for legislators to re-enter.
As for his alignment with Trump, Cawthorn said he thought Trump went too far in his words before Wednesday’s violence.
“I do believe that saying we needed to march down to the Capitol was a mistake on behalf of the president. Any of my supporters who are thinking about trying to take democracy in their own hands and storm the Capitol again, I have to say they do not support the same type of politics I support,” Cawthorn said.

Ultimately, the electoral votes were certified.
“It appears Joe Biden is going to be the president, and I will support the office of the presidency," Cawthorn said.
