Asheville police have charged a man accused of trying to take dogs from local animal shelters.

Mitchell Lee Mosley Jr. is charged with attempted larceny.

Police say he’s the man seen in the surveillance video from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Kennel supervisor Rachel Brown was working the day the dog, Meatball, was snatched from his cage.

In the video, you can see a man unhook the crate, grab the pup and attempt to walk out, but Brown stops him before he can.

“I said, ‘What’re you doing?’ And, he said, ‘I’m adopting a dog.’ And, I said, ‘No,’” Brown recalled.

Brown says the man left before police got there.

Police say he attempted the same thing again, though. This time at the Asheville Humane Society.

“Someone immediately recognized them from the news last night and made sure that we immediately removed them from the building,” said Meredith Pitcairn, of Asheville Humane Society.

Minutes later, police arrived and arrested Mosley.

An outcome everyone, including Meatball, sure hoped for.

Police say a female who accompanied Mosley was not charged per the magistrate.
