Authorities have identified the man they say killed himself after an hours-long standoff at the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Timothy L. Wright said Camden Owen McWhirter, 33, of Cleveland County, died after the incident.

Sheriff Wright says McWhirter was arrested Sunday morning for suspicion of driving while impaired and taken to the Polk County Detention Center. Once on the secured lot, Wright said McWhirter revealed that he had a weapon.

After several hours of negotiations involving multiple law enforcement agencies, Wright said McWhirter took his own life.

"Speaking with a few of the officers that I did, I know they were very upset, because we were working towards a peaceful solution to this matter," Sheriff Wright told News 13 on Sunday. "We can't control what the individual does. We can't control that at all."

The sheriff said the NCSBI is conducting an independent investigation of the incident.
