Mental Wellness Walk in Asheville hopes to raise awareness

Some cloudy, rainy weather cleared up just in time for the second annual Mental Wellness Walk in Asheville.

It was held Saturday morning at Carrier Park, and was meant to raise awareness of the importance of mental wellness, and community resources available for those seeking help.

An organizer told us why this is a critical issue in Buncombe County, and beyond.

"Mental illness has sort of been a hidden illness, very common but hidden," said Charlie Shoenheit, executive director of All Souls Counseling. "People are afraid to talk about it, afraid to discuss their own problems, mostly because of the long-standing stigma."

The annual walk's hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Health and All Souls Counseling Center.
