BURNSVILLE, N.C. -- A motorcycle rider was killed by lightning on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mount Mitchell State Park.

The Gaston Gazette reports that Scott Pasour was with two other motorcyclists when it happened. According to the newspaper, the group stopped to put on rain gear on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the entrance of the park on Saturday when a bolt struck Pasour's helmet.

Pasour was flown by helicopter to Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he was pronounced dead, according to the newspaper.

Pasour was a lay minister at Venture Church in Dallas, N.C. He also owned Pasour Auto Repair. The Gaston Gazette reports that he was well-known for leading a Bible study on Tuesday nights at his shop, which attracted other motorcyclists.
