The Asheville Police Department has identified the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred on Fayetteville Street in West Asheville.

The Asheville Police Department reports responding to a call for shots fired at approximately 5:30 a.m. Upon arrival, officers located a victim, Antwan Terrell Eddings, 18, of Asheville, who had succumbed to injuries as a result of gunshot wounds.

While at the scene, officialsdetained an individual after negotiations between a SWAT team and the individual took place. The SWAT team tried and eventually got the person to come out of a residence.

The home at the center of the SWAT negotiations is located directly next to the home where the deceased victim was found this morning

The individual has been detained and is a person of interest. The identity of the person has not been confirmed at this time.

Interim Police Chief Robert White described the earlier situation.

"Through further investigation, it is a possibility that it was an individual there of interest," said White. "Prior to entering that home with our SWAT team, we attempted to communicate with that person unsuccessfully. So again, for that person's safety and for our safety we deployed gas. Eventually the individual did come out."

Interim Police Chief White said it is undetermined if the shooting that occurred on the same block overnight is related to the homicide that took place. He said the police department is continuing to investigate whether there is a connection or not.
