Polk County authorities identify woman killed in mudslide
Polk County authorities have identified the woman killed by a mudslide Friday as Patricia Case.
Heavy rain produced flash flooding and mudslides in Polk County, which closed roads and ultimately trapped and killed Case near her Tryon home.
According to Bobby Arledge, Polk County emergency management director, the woman on lived the 3000 block of U.S. -176.
Emergency crews say her husband made it out alive.
Officials tell us it was late Friday night when he reported the mudslide had separated him and his wife. Crews spent hours trying to get the woman out, but there was just so much mud that by the time they reached her, it was too late.
"It was rushing water," said Melanie Estrada, who lives off Highway 176.
She says she tried to help save Case as Case was swept away in the floodwaters, but there was nothing she or the woman's husband could do.
"He got her out of the house and he had her in the garage. She has a bad back and other health problems, and he went to go get help and it was just, whoosh," Estrada told News 13.
No other injuries were reported in the incident that took Case's life.
