The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn Friday, January 26, 2018, weather permitting, in the Nantahala Ranger District.

The 1762-acre burn is planned in the Round Mountain area south of Cashiers in Jackson County, on the state line with South Carolina.

The burn will be completed in conjunction with the Andrew Pickens Ranger District on the Sumter National Forest.

A portion of Foothills Trail from Highway 281 to Highway 107 will be closed during the burn and is expected to reopen Friday evening.

The Forest Service says the goal of these understory burns is to reduce hazardous fuels on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires and improve wildlife habitat.
