Riverbend Elementary named a Blue Ribbon School for 2nd time
High marks once again for Riverbend Elementary School in Haywood County. Friday afternoon, the school celebrated its recognition for the second time as a national Blue Ribbon School.
School leaders accepted the award in Washington D.C. in November. But Friday, the student body, celebrated with T-shirts, cake and punch.
Riverbend won the award for “exemplary high performing schools.” That means students tested in the top 15 percent of all schools in the state in English and math.
“Riverbend is an amazing community, and it's been an honor to be here. We've got the most supportive parents, respectful parents, hard-working parents, children, expert teachers,” principal Jill Chambers said.
Some 143 North Carolina schools have earned Blue Ribbon status since 1982. Of those, only eight have achieved it twice. Riverbend is one of those eight.
This was also Superintendent Anne Garrett’s last day with Haywood County Schools before retiring.
