Assistant County Manager/Planning Director Jon Creighton will soon be retiring.

County Attorney Michael Frue says Creighton gave notice of his retirement on November 27, 2017. He will continue to work through the end of the year.

Buncombe County hired Creighton in 1982. According to personnel information, he's 65 years old.

Creighton worked as an assistant county manager for years under Wanda Greene.

Going forward Frue said there will be one full-time assistant county manager. Frue said Jim Holland will assume that role starting February 1, 2018. Frue said the county is recruiting a planning director.

The following is Michael Frue's full statement to News 13:

Here is our response to your request regarding Jon Creighton’s retirement.
After 36 years of service to our County, and at the age of 65 Jon Creighton gave notice of his retirement on November 27, 2017 effective January 1, 2018. His vacancy provided an opportunity to evaluate the current structure of his division and the role of part-time Assistant County Managers. We are realigning our current staffing such that we will now have one full-time Assistant County Manager and no part-time Assistant County Mangers. The full-time Assistant County Manager will assume many of the duties that the two part-time Assistant Managers had responsibility for. The County is recruiting a Planning Director at this time.
